Everyone loves a compliment. Everyone is changed by a compliment. And everyone can create change with a compliment.
I have wanted to change the world since I was a little girl, and I've come to believe the world is craving exactly this โ a sincere compliment. We all want to feel good about ourselves. We all want to know we matter. And the beautiful truth is that we can all feel better, one compliment at a time.
A compliment goes straight to the heart
Think about the last time someone told you something kind and meant it. Not "nice shirt" in passing, but something real: "You handled that with so much grace." "You make everyone in this room feel welcome." "I'm proud of how far you've come."
You probably remember exactly where you were standing. That's because a sincere compliment doesn't bounce off โ it lands in the heart. It reaches the part of us that wonders, quietly, Am I enough? Do I matter? Does anyone see me? And it answers: Yes.
Compliments are little gifts of love that keep on giving.
Compliments change how we see ourselves
Compliments build self-esteem and self-worth. When someone notices something good in us, we start to notice it too. A child who hears "What an accomplishment!" learns that effort is worth it. An adult who hears "I appreciate you" stands a little taller walking out the door.
Over time, the compliments we receive become the voice we hear in our own heads. That's why giving them โ and learning to receive them โ is one of the most important acts of self-love there is.
And here's the secret most of us never learned: receiving a compliment is easy. You smile and say, "Thank you." That's it. No "Oh, this old thing." No waving it away. When you say thank you and let it in, you're telling your own heart that you're worth the kind words.
Compliments change how we see each other
The magic works both ways. To give a real compliment, you have to look for the good in someone. You have to notice. And once you start looking for the good in people, you find it everywhere โ in your partner, your coworkers, your kids, the cashier, even the person who cut you off this morning.
Compliments teach us to communicate positively in every kind of situation. They open doors, warm up conversations, ease tension and turn strangers into friends. In a family, they build connection. In a classroom, they build kindness. In a workplace, they build teams that actually want to show up. There is no better defense against unkindness than words of love.
Three kinds of compliments
At Compliments for Change, we teach three simple kinds of compliments, so they're easy to give and easy to recognize:
- I Notice You! โ a personal compliment about who someone is and how they make you feel.
- I Appreciate You! โ a thank-you for what someone does and the difference it makes.
- What an Accomplishment! โ recognition of a job well done, a goal reached, a hard thing finished.
What makes a compliment real
A good compliment is sincere, specific and respectful โ and it provides no obvious benefit to the giver. It isn't flattery and it isn't a sales pitch. It's free. Before you give one, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it specific? Would I say it even if they weren't in the room?
A good compliment is a little outburst of enthusiasm and positivity, given simply, spontaneously and sincerely. You don't need to be an expert. You just need to be genuine.
One compliment can change the world
Compliments create a desire to perform. They increase success, improve self-esteem, invite acceptance and gratitude, and spark teamwork, collaboration and positive energy. Most of all, they make us feel happy โ and valued.
So here is my challenge to you today: give one sincere compliment. Notice someone. Appreciate someone. Celebrate someone's accomplishment. Then, when a kind word comes back your way, smile and say thank you.
One person. One compliment. One act of love at a time. That's how we change the world.
With love,
Dawn
Who will you give your first sincere compliment to today?
